Safari holidays have changed somewhat over the last couple of decades: khaki bivouacs and hunting are out, eco-tourism and luxury lodges are in.  However, the main reasons for going are the same: to experience the wilderness and to see fabled animals in their own natural environment, rather than in an enclosure five minutes from the Underground!

No matter how many wildlife programmes you have seen, nothing prepares you for Africa in particular: it gets under your skin and is full of surprises; it can be as green as Ireland but baked as a desert; the space and distance is on a scale un-imaginable to European eyes.

But Africa is a whole continent made up of very different countries each with its own special features, cultures, topography and wildlife.  And although Africa is most commonly associated with safaris, there are many other safari opportunities on other continents.

Here is a list of destinations you could consider for a safari holiday, but please don’t forget the wealth of natural wonders that we have in Europe: for example the polar bears and Northern Lights in Norway, reindeer in Sweden, wolves in Romania, bears in Finland, whales in the Azores - and Europe's 'last wilderness', Poland.
