Zermatt’s ski area, linked to Cervinia, is dominated by the majestic Matterhorn and offers not only stunning skiing but also Europe’s highest ski area. Reached by a scenic 10-minute train ride up from the valley below, the delightful traffic-free resort centre oozes Swiss charm. Elegant shopping streets are crammed with chic shops and historic hotels, whilst traditional wooden ‘mazots’ and modern chalet-style buildings blend comfortably together. The restaurants are amazingly varied, whilst the après-ski and night-life are as laidback or frenetic as you wish.
Over 95% of the slopes are over 2,000m, extending upwards to the highest top station in Europe. From here at 3,800m there is an unbeatable 2,200m drop of skiing back to the resort – not to be attempted without at least one pit-stop on the way!
There are three main ski areas. The Klein Matterhorn has morale-boosting open runs and superb off-piste toward and over the Italian border into Cervinia. The Gornergrat at 3,100m has a choice of wide, flattering runs and some of the most difficult skiing in the region – the Triftji bumps are some of the best in Europe. From here you can ski across to the Sunnegga, which can also be reached by taking the underground railway from town.
